We have another family-friendly movie for you and it is just in time for baseball season. The only thing is that the movie isn’t really about baseball. It is instead about a special boy with a special talent who will not only inspire you, but also teach you a few things about never giving up.

From the director: A story of hope, strength and the power of friendship

From the director of Angels in the Outfield

Based on the book The Legend of Mickey Tussler, this family-friendly film follows the story of 18 year-old Mickey Tussler, who lives on a farm with his father and mother and who has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. He can throw apples at an amazing speed. When a chance meeting occurs with the baseball manager of the semi-pro team the River Rats, Mickey gets a chance to pitch for the team and to prove to his father he can do more than live hidden away on the family farm taking care of his pig Oscar.

The Mighty Macs {review and giveaway} CLOSED

Cathy Rush is a newly married woman who has not easily transitioned into her role as housewife and bleacher warming cheerleader for her NBA referee husband. Both Cathy and her husband have a love of basketball and as a former college basketball player, she is not satisfied with only watching from the sidelines.

When the opportunity of becoming a basketball coach at the Catholic all-girls’ Immaculata College opens up, Cathy jumps at the opportunity despite opposition from her husband. It does not matter that the college offers her practically nothing in pay due to it being on the verge of bankruptcy, or that the gymnasium no longer exist due to fire, or that most of the players lack competitive basketball skills. It also does not matter that she receives minimal support from Mother St. John, the president of the college and also the person who hired her to basically be a baby sitter for these young girls.

What matters is that Cathy has a dream and she realizes that unless she does everything possible to fulfill it, she will never be at peace with herself. Cathy sets her aspirations high especially since this is the first year (1971-1972) in women’s basketball that a national champion will be crowned.

Immaculata Mighty Macs – National Champions…impossible, maybe, but Cathy never stops long enough to consider all of the obstacles. She pushes through coaching her team and along the way sparks a confidence in her players, garners support from the students, the nuns at the college, the community, and eventually Mother St. John who rally around these underdog basketball players.

There are heart warming moments like when Cathy and the girls return from a competition, past curfew, and are confronted by Mother St. John. Cathy is immediately apologetic having already been warned about keeping the girls out past curfew. Instead of being chastised, Cathy and the team not only learn they are going to the championship but waiting to greet them is a room full of Immaculata students and faculty with congratulations.

Later, following in another scene as the team is doing a photo-shoot for their new celebrity, the girls gather clothing and accessories for a fellow teammate after the photographer insist she “move to the back” because he thinks she is inappropriately dressed. You see growth in the girls, who all joined the team for selfish reasons, come together as a team on and off of the court.

In regards to the affect her coaching has on her marriage, Cathy is reminded by her assistant coach nun to “keep her eye on the ball,” and she is not talking about basketball. Cathy is determined as a coach and we have to assume that she and her husband resolve their differences because he is later shown, in between his games, warming the bleachers and rooting her on to victory.

This is an inspiring, true story of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Cathy Rush who led The Mighty Macs of Immaculata College to three consecutive AIAW national titles (1972-1974). Also an inductee into the women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, Cathy far surpassed her dreams.

FFH – One Silent Night {review & giveaway}

November 25, 2011 by
Filed under giveaway, Homeschool Roster, music, reviews

FFH, composed of the husband and wife duo Jeromy and Jennifer Deibler, is helping us usher in the Christmas season with their recent release of One Silent Night (listen to it on iTunes). It is a mix of old favorites that include “Winter Wonderland,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” and some new ones written by FFH that include “The Birthday of a King,” “Glorious Impossible,” and “One Silent Night” that have FFH’s signature harmony and appeal for which they are known.

This is the first Christmas album from the pop-duo and marks one of several changes that have occurred for this band that was originally formed and started in 1991 by Jeromy Deibler and Brian Smith. Known for such hits as “You Found Me” and “Lord Move or Move Me,” FFH became popular with band members Jeromy and Jennifer Deibler, Brian Smith, and Michael Boggs and went on to enjoy a successful music career and releasing eight albums over the course of one decade.

At that point, Jeromy and Jennifer had spent ten of their eleven years of marriage being a part of FFH and touring, and realized that they needed to focus more on their marriage and young family which then included a son. After much prayer by the band members, it was decided to disband the group indefinitely and so they said goodbye to their fans in 2006.

Since then, God has continued doing a work in the Deibler’s lives leading them to minister for a period in South Africa, adding to their growing family with a second child, and being their comfort when Jeremy was later diagnosed with MS. After an eventful two years away from the stage and touring, they learned a lot about themselves…

“FFH is a part of our lives again, but it is just a part,” Jeromy insists. “We are determined to live the kingdom lifestyle of putting our relationships first. Selling albums doesn’t fulfill you. It doesn’t comfort you when you are lying in bed at night after being diagnosed with MS, while your wife is seven months pregnant. The fact that you’ve sold a million albums means nothing. It is weightless. What does mean something is that your family is with you, being Jesus to you.

Learn more about FFH: visit the FFH Web site, Listen to earlier FFH Albums, Like FFH and leave a message on their Facebook page, or follow Jeromy on Twitter.

GIVEAWAY PRIZE
One (1) lucky reader will win a down-loadable copy of “One Silent Night” by FFH.

Introducing Theo {review & giveaway}

September 14, 2011 by
Filed under giveaway, Homeschool Roster

Sharing the gospel with our children is so important because it gives them the tools they need to build a Biblical foundation that will be the basis for the decisions they will make in their lives, enable them to have the knowledge of His Word, and give them the confidence to share it with others. Whitestone Media has given parents and teachers another resource for sharing the gospel with children in the new animated DVD series Theo.

Theo Presents centers around the life of Theo(logy), a pleasant Englishman who lives in a quaint English village in the middle of Cotswold. He entertains many guests which include resident mice, Belfry and Luther as well as the many children and adults who will watch the DVD with whom he “guides through a careful study of systematic theology.” While a “guest” in Theo’s home, he discusses the Bible and God’s character as well as other Christian ideas on salvation and Godly values, and doctrines about sin in a manner that children can easily understand.

Watch the Bonus Episode “Good News”

The characters may be a little reminiscent of Disney, but if Theo reminds you a little of Mr. Whittaker from Adventures in Odyssey (AO), then that might be because this series is also produced by Michael Joens who directed and produced AO.

The episodes are about nine minutes long, which may seem quite short, but they are not really made for entertainment, but rather to be used as teaching tools and the segments are great openers for a discussion on the topic covered on the DVD.

Episode #1 , “Saving Faith,” was just released which will be followed by the October release of episode #2, “Loving Obedience,” with episodes #3 and #4, “Forgiveness” and “Armor of God” respectively, that are due soon.

Because of Whitestone Media’s mission to reach the world for Christ, they are offering a unique opportunity called “Buy One, Give One” where for every purchase of a “Theo: God’s Love” DVD, Whitestone Media and Child Evangelism Fellowship® will send a DVD to one child in need. The purchaser is able to choose the recipient of the “gifted” DVD.

Learn more about Theo: visit the Web site and Like Theo Presents on its Facebook page.

The Grace Card {review & giveaway}

August 16, 2011 by
Filed under giveaway, Homeschool Roster, movies, reviews

***GIVEAWAY CLOSED – WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1***

It is because of movies like The Grace Card that Homeschool Roster totally supports Christian cinema. It is one that moves you covering topics that affect all of us from racism, forgiveness, reconciliation, and then to grace which is something we all need a little (a lot) bit of as well as knowing how to extend it. The Grace Card is brought to us by Memphis optometrist Dr. David Evans who not only wrote and directed the movie, but also is the man behind Graceworks Pictures of which The Grace Card is its debut project. Many may already be familiar with Dr. Evans’ artistic work from seeing the Passion Play at Calvary Church (located in Cordova), which has been credited to his writing, producing, and directing talents for more than 15 years.

We get to see a lot of the city of Memphis which is not only used as a backdrop, but also “plays a central character” in the film as we ride along and experience days in the lives, on and off duty, of Memphis Police officers Bill “Mac” McDonald and “Sargent Pastor” Sam Wright, who are Caucasian and African American, respectively. Both men are at different points in their careers – Mac who has been a beat-cop for more than a decade and Sam who is a recently promoted Sargent – and have been temporarily partnered. Along with the differences in their professional lives, their personal lives also reveal a contrast with Sam being a loving family-man and part-time pastor and Mac with a home full of anger, bitterness, and resentment, which has been fueled by him ever since the tragic loss of his young son many years earlier.

Sam and Mac are two men struggling for purpose in their lives and only One really understands the reason for why these two men have been brought together. As the movie progresses and we watch the building of their relationship, we also begin to see the design of God at work as they move past their obvious differences and He begins the healing and provides the direction they both need in their lives. There are but a few things that make us different and so many more things that make us the same.

David Evans has created a beautiful story that touches on, but does not belabor the subject of racism and race, but neatly weaves the themes into the storyline and shows how both can easily permeate our lives and cause so many other emotions like unforgiveness and anger to manifest and slowly destroy or prevent the developing of a relationship. We can see this displayed in Mac’s life and how hopeless he has become as a result. On the other hand, Sam who views people as children of God is also tested as he realizes that it isn’t always so easy to love everyone. One thing to remember is that it is easier to receive grace than it is to extend it and we get to see the lesson displayed through the characters in the movie.

The ending of the movie will bring tears to your eyes, but make you that more thankful for grace. Just a suggestion…get your Grace Card ready so you will be able to play it when God asks you to.
